Try a few different types of nappies before you buy a whole birth to
potty set. If this is your first baby and you plan to have more than one
child, don’t forget that the set of nappies you buy will be a big part
of your life for several years! You can always build up your collection
over time and this will help to avoid costly mistakes.
-
Having said that, by far the most economical option is to buy a set of
One-size nappies, i.e. BumGenius or Motherease One-size.
-
Fleece
liners can be made easily at home from a piece of fleece from a remnant
box in a fabric shop. Fleece does not fray so no hemming involved!
-
Buying
a set of
washable wipes can save £8 per month compared to disposable
wipes. You just sling them in the nappy bucket along with the nappies.
You will probably need about 30. The fleece/terry double sided wipes
also make great fleece-topped boosters in tiny newborn nappies.
-
The
Ultra
paper liners can be washed and used again if they are only wet, not
soiled. We also found that the washed paper liners made excellent wipes
once sprayed with water.
-
Why not try
getting by with only 12 nappies and having some terry squares with nippa
fasteners (rather than pins) in reserve? Knowing you are going to have
to fold those terry squares will get you organised with the washing!
-
A very cheap
source of inserts for stuffable pocket nappies are microfibre cleaning
cloths from supermarkets. (89p for three from Tesco.) They are very
thin, so dry quickly, and are great for boosting your regular insert
(not thick enough on their own). Wash them a few times before use to
increase their absorbency.

Sell unwanted
nappies – some of the better known brands fetch close to retail price
second hand.
